Like most indigenous plants, aloes do not really like artificial fertilisers.  However, if you feel your soil is very poor you can certainly work in some well-decomposed compost into the soil, or just use it as mulch around the plants.  Apart from giving them extra nourishment, the compost will help to ensure that the soil around the plants is well drained if it is incorporated into the soil before planting.
