Notes: This fine indigenous tree is a relative of the elms, not the common stinkwoods, as its name might suggest. One of the best deciduous trees for the garden, it makes a splendid shade tree with a sturdy trunk, and pretty, oval, fresh green leaves. The white stinkwood forms an excellent backdrop to flowering shrubs and plants with other kinds of foliage. Its distinctive, smooth bark, shading from pale grey to almost white, adds a stark, silvery beauty to its winter tracery of bare branches.
This tree grows best in areas with good summer rains and mild frost but it can be grown in cooler or drier areas.
Plant in an open, position where the tree has plenty of space to develop its attractive shape. Water well until established, particularly in drier regions and the winter rainfall areas. Protect from strong, prevailing winds.
