Notes: Genus of 250 species. One of our most decorative trees with an attractive, upright shape and dense canopy. Can be used with great success in the garden. It's fast-growing and tolerates moderate drought and frost. Use to provide background foliage, as a specimen tree, along an avenue or to provide shade. It has an interesting foliage colour. In Spring the new leaves may appear white (actually foliaceious bracts). As Spring advances the foliage turns a soft green changing to a deep green as the leaves mature. The tree retains its rich red Autumn colouring for most of Winter. Its leafless period is only about a month. The pink fruits cover the canopy in middle to late Summer. Cultivated specimens tend to retain many lower branches which can create a good screening effect.
