Young trees are single stemmed but older specimens may have massive trunks with a roundish crown of large, smooth dark green leaves. Branching commences when the tree is 2 - 4 metres tall. The small tightly packed flowers are borne on branched inflorescences. The small fleshy fruits which and soft and purple when mature are eaten by black-eyed bulbuls, louries, starlings, barbets and mousebirds. Fruiting begins at about eight years. Prefers a high rainfall and does not survive drought. Don’t plant too close to paving or pools - the roots are invasive and may cause damage. Propagate from seed.
