Plant your tree in good soil in a deep hole of at least 50 cm2. Mix plentiful compost and a bit of fertiliser (bone-meal or super phosphate) in and wet the soil well after the tree has been planted. When it starts growing it can be fed with general grain manures like 2:3:2 or 3:2:1 (28) SR. After 2-3 years the feeding and most of the additional watering can be phased out. Large trees will still benefit from extra feeding (every now and then) and also from watering if it is administered by pipes driven deeply into the ground near the roots.
Large trees usually don’t have to be fed and regular rain is satisfactory. All trees benefit from a compost cover layer, but otherwise large trees don’t need any care.
Low-growing and dead branches can be removed but don’t need any more pruning. Branches that stretch over roofs and other problem areas can be pruned without harming the tree.
Do trees, like bushes, need to be pruned, fed and watered from time to time?
