Notes : Genus of 5 - 6 species. A clump-forming, tufty, grass-like perennial belonging to the Lily family. Being low-growing, it is ideal as an edging to beds & borders. Also grows well in containers. The green leaves are long and narrow. Flowers from Summer to Autumn. Good as a cut flower. Bears the typical grape hyacinth flower but is grown as much for its decorative foliage. The +\- 30 centimetre high spikes have tiny violet-purple flowers that are followed by blue berries. Plant in composted, moist but well-drained soil. Does best in areas of high Summer rainfall. It can be grown in drier regions provided it is watered regularly. Not suited to hot, humid conditions or dry inland areas. Divide in Spring. Pests and diseases: young growth is susceptible to slug damage.
