Notes : Genus of about 120 species. In South Africa, Magnolias perform best in the cooler temperate regions with high rainfall. Not suitable for growing in warm subtropical areas. Keep regularly watered, particularly in Summer during dry periods. When not in bloom, the large broad bright green leaves make a striking foliage contrast. Vegetative propagation is preferred either by grafting in Winter or softwood tip cuttings in late Spring. Layering and air layering are also successful methods to propagate Magnolias.

A magnificent tree for South African gardens. The foliage is large and leathery, glossy green above and often rusty red beneath. During Summer huge creamy white flowers to 25 centimetres across are borne terminally usually high on the tree. Cold resistant in all but the most severe parts.
