Notes : Genus of one species. Although it has cane-like stems and a lacy bamboo-like look, it is classified as a shrub. The leaves are a soft pink as they open, turning a light green in Summer and then changing to striking shades of red to purple in Autumn. The colouring is more intense in colder areas. The small star-shaped white flowers with large yellow anthers appear in Spring and are followed by clusters of long-lasting, red, shiny berries.

The delicate foliage makes a charming contrast to bigger leafed shrubs and its erect growth habit contrasts well with spreading shrubs. It prefers light shade and fertile, moist, but well-drained soil. This graceful plant is not suited to dry regions, unless well watered. It favours a sunny spot in cooler, moist regions but prefers some shade in the hotter, drier areas. Propagate from suckers or hardwood cuttings in early Spring.Vinca minor 'Silver Queen' has white and green leaves and bears purple blue flowers.
