Notes : Genus of 17 species. Easy to grow. This palm has arching leaves from ground level when young, but later as the stem lengthens the bottom leaves die off. When fully grown it has a gracefully erect stem with fronds arching from the crown. The bottom leaves need to be cut off to keep this palm looking neat. This species is characterised by the bright yellow spines on the leaf stalks. The cream to yellow flowers are borne in pendent panicles on stalks about 2 metres long in Summer. The heavy bunches of fruits are yellow, flushed red with edible, sweet but almost dry flesh. They are cylindrical to ellipsoid in shade. Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil.
