Notes : Genus of 17 species. One of the most popular small palms - it makes a striking attractive plant for decks and patios. It is an ideal container subject as it rarely tops 1.5 metres. Its spiny fronds may be a disadvantage in confined areas. Bowl-shaped cream flowers appear in panicles, up to 45 centimetres long, usually in summer, followed by edible black fruit. Grow in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun, with some midday shade. It will thrive in a light, woodland situation. When in growth, water freely and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser monthly. Water sparingly in winter. It often has a narrow skirt of dead leaves which should be removed to keep the plant tidy.
