Notes: The pin oak makes a fine garden tree, provided it can be given enough space. It’s ideal for a large garden and should be planted as a specimen tree or focal point rather than as a background tree. The deeply divided, bright green leaves turn a vivid red in autumn, especially in cold areas.
This adaptable tree grows best in areas which have cold to very cold winters and a high summer rainfall, but it can be grown in drier regions, as well as in the winter-rainfall areas. It is not suited to hot, humid conditions or to the very dry, inland regions.
Plant in deep, rich soil, in an open, sunny space, which will allow the tree ample room to develop. It will need protection from strong winds, or these will spoil its shape. Keep well watered until established, especially in drier regions.
