Notes: A highly recommended shrub often called Australian Brush Cherry. Ornamental and columnar, it is useful as a background shrub, as container plant, as a screener or as a windbreak. It also makes a strong trimmed hedge. Has shiny narrow, mid-green leaves and bronze-red new growth. In summer it produces small fluffy creamy white flowers and later pinky red fruits. These make a clear, ruby red jelly. The Eugenia grows best in warm, frost-free areas. In the drier areas it needs regular watering. Prefers a fairly fertile soil which has been enriched with compost. It should be planted in a sunny position, as too much shade leads to loss of foliage colour and few flowers. These trees self-seed freely and are not fussy about soil.
